As PCV’s Managing Director of InSight, Justin uses his diverse background in investing, consulting, and impact – plus his passion for making a difference in the world – to lead the organization’s impact investing advisory practice. PCV is one of the most experienced impact investment specialists in the world, having worked with many of the most prominent institutional investors and philanthropies in the impact investment industry, including CalPERS, Omidyar Network, and the Ford, W.K. Kellogg, MacArthur, and Rockefeller Foundations. Justin is also a member of PCV’s Executive Leadership Team and a professional advisor in PCV’s Business Advising program which includes mentoring small businesses and serving as an expert panelist for entrepreneurial educational events.
Prior to joining PCV, Justin spent 16 years with the Minneapolis-based institutional investment consultant, Jeffrey Slocum & Associates. He held multiple roles at Slocum including Director of Non-U.S. Equity Research and Senior Consultant focused on leading many of firm’s endowment and foundation client relationships. Justin was also responsible for creating and leading Slocum’s Responsible Investment Team, which focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities. Research coverage included: ESG integration; mission-aligned investing (MRIs and PRIs); theme-based opportunities (e.g., social enterprises, food and water security, microfinance, climate change, green infrastructure, agriculture/forestry); placed-based investing; benchmarking/social impact measurement; and policy/governance ramifications. In addition to founding the Slocum RI Team, Justin established the Slocum Research Portfolio (SRP), a multi-asset class, multi-manager fund, designed to be a total portfolio solution for smaller endowments and foundations. He was the Portfolio Manager for the SRP and led all aspects of fund operation including investing, fund administration, legal (fund structuring and offering documentation), accounting, audit and investor relations.
From 2008 to 2013, Justin took a break from active duty at Slocum to found the impact investment firm, Couloir Global Investors, focused on sustainable forestry in Africa. Justin led the startup’s overall operations including strategy, finance, ESG policy, legal, accounting and marketing. He established various strategic partnerships, including with Collabrium Capital, a London-based emerging markets specialist co-founded by Arnab Banerji, former Chief Investment Officer of Foreign & Colonial and Senior Policy Advisor on Economic Affairs to former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Justin received a BA in economics from St. John’s University in Minnesota and an MBA with honors from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He has been an active volunteer for the Jones-Harrison Residence serving on their Foundation’s Executive Board since 1999 and has been a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor for over 15 years.
