Family Laundry, a family-owned business\u00a0established\u00a0in Oakland in 2018, has built its reputation on something simple: showing up for its community. What began as a neighborhood laundromat has grown into a thriving pickup-and-delivery laundry service serving customers across Oakland, the East Bay, and San Francisco. Today, with more than 30 employees and a growing fleet of electric vehicles, Family Laundry is proving that small businesses can drive economic opportunity,\u00a0climate health, and community impact all at once.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Building for the Future<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Family Laundry expanded its pickup-and-delivery operations, customer demand continued to grow.\u00a0The challenge\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0finding\u00a0customers,\u00a0it was building the infrastructure needed to serve them efficiently and sustainably.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David and Laura\u00a0had already begun transitioning\u00a0their\u00a0delivery fleet to electric\u00a0vehicles and\u00a0quickly\u00a0started to see\u00a0both the environmental and financial\u00a0improvements in the business.\u00a0They further explored\u00a0new technologies\u00a0that could help streamline operations, improve customer communication,\u00a0optimize\u00a0delivery routes, and create more efficient internal systems\u00a0\u2013 even tinkering with using AI agents to\u00a0optimize\u00a0operations. Like many small businesses, Family Laundry faced the challenge of balancing innovation\u00a0and long-term business investments\u00a0with limited resources. While grants and incentives helped support portions of their\u00a0clean\u00a0energy goals, the business still needed affordable capital to invest in infrastructure and future growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Capital That Helped Turn Vision\u00a0into\u00a0Reality<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Family Laundry was introduced to Pacific Community Ventures through Community Bank\u00a0of the Bay\u00a0in Oakland,\u00a0California and connected with\u00a0<\/span>PCV’s Climate Resilience Mobilization Fund<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through a $500,000 climate\u00a0resilience\u00a0loan, PCV helped provide the financing needed to build a dedicated EV charging hub and expand the company’s\u00a0clean\u00a0transportation infrastructure\u00a0and delivery fleet. Supported by grant funding\u00a0and equity investments\u00a0from the Bay Area Air District, Los Angeles\u00a0Cleantech\u00a0Incubator (LACI), and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), PCV\u2019s loan\u00a0helped to catalyze\u00a0additional\u00a0flexible financing needed to move the project from planning to execution. By\u00a0filling\u00a0the gap between grant commitments and project deployment, the financing helped Family Laundry accelerate its expansion and highlighted how a strong ecosystem of community partners can help small business owners turn ambitious goals into reality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2025, Family Laundry officially\u00a0<\/span>launched its\u00a0clean-energy charging station<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at their facility in\u00a0Oakland\u2019s Fruitvale\u00a0neighborhood alongside community partners, local leaders, and Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee. The project includes solar energy generation\u00a0with rooftop panels,\u00a0microgrid for\u00a0battery storage, and charging capacity for up to 17 electric delivery vehicles, creating one of the Bay Area’s first small business-owned charging hubs designed to support both company operations and other local businesses pursuing electrification.\u00a0One of those local businesses is another PCV partner,\u00a0Community Kitchens, which\u00a0acquired\u00a0an all-electric, refrigerated delivery van\u00a0to deliver healthy food to food deserts and families in the Oakland area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, Family Laundry continues to explore responsible and practical uses of artificial intelligence to strengthen business operations. The team is implementing AI-powered solutions that help automate administrative tasks, streamline workflows, improve customer experience, and create operational efficiencies that allow staff to focus on higher-value work. David shared, \u201cThe AI tools that have come to market (namely Claude Cowork) are nothing short of revolutionary. They can make\u00a0virtually any\u00a0small business a \u201csoftware developer,\u201d or at the very least level the playing field vs. the big guys.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For David and Laura, innovation is about giving employees better tools and creating a stronger, more resilient business.\u00a0That resilience includes ensuring that their 30+ employees not only access living wages, but stable scheduling for predictive income stability, family-friendly\u00a0hours\u00a0and shift options, and are committed to improving job quality to ensure their employees improve financial health and wellbeing outcomes.\u00a0The energy efficiency in their business not only helps to save energy costs in a high energy cost area of\u00a0California, but\u00a0also\u00a0improves climate outcomes for the neighborhood\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0in, one that\u00a0remains\u00a0a\u00a0climate risk hotspot. The long-term business innovation, coupled with\u00a0good\u00a0jobs\u00a0creation, and community health outcomes by decarbonizing a local\u00a0business\u00a0is an inspiring example of the power of what is possible in the new climate economy!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As demand continues to increase, Family Laundry expects to add drivers, operations staff, and customer service team members while\u00a0maintaining\u00a0the values that have guided the company since day one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
