How PCV helped:
Paired with volunteer mentor Elizabeth, Kristi built scalable systems, launched a climate-conscious refill model, and strengthened overall brand visibility.
Kinky Rootz Salon and Queen of Kinks were born from Kristi Mefford’s lived experience as a service-disabled Navy veteran navigating spaces that offered limited support for natural hair. What began as personal frustration quickly evolved into a mission-driven business purpose. Kinky Rootz provides a natural hair sanctuary where Black women are celebrated without chemicals or judgment, while Queen of Kinks offers a handcrafted, plant-based product line created in honor of Kristi’s late best friend Shayla. Since founding her brands, Kristi has seen her business grow in both scope and impact, driven by a commitment to cultural authenticity, community empowerment, and sustainable practices.
Kristi discovered Pacific Community Ventures while working with B Lab who referred her to PCV. Her primary challenge for seeking support was building operational infrastructure while remaining true to the mission and values that define Kinky Rootz and Queen of Kinks. Without guidance and funding aligned with her unique needs, Kristi found herself managing rapid demand, operational limitations, and market competition largely on her own.

Through PCV, Kristi was matched with mentor Elizabeth Yeo, and the relationship quickly became more than advisory. It became a partnership rooted in shared experiences, empowerment, and growth. Despite having only one formal session initially, Kristi and Elizabeth established a bi-weekly “Growth Sessions” focused on business development, strategic planning, and operational guidance. Kristi describes the connection as uniquely impactful: “We connected on so many levels, especially with us both being female veterans in an entrepreneurial space.” With Elizabeth’s mentorship, Kristi has been able to address critical challenges such as building scalable systems, developing a climate-conscious refill and reuse model, and enhancing brand visibility online and in retail.
The mentorship experience has already delivered tangible results. Kristi has begun creating structured content plans, strengthening fulfillment processes, and exploring marketing and retail strategies that reflect her mission while preparing her brands for sustainable growth. Beyond the technical guidance, the relationship with Elizabeth provides Kristi with strategic insight, honest feedback, and access to networks and resources that are essential for long-term success. She defines a successful mentorship relationship as one built on trust, shared values, and actionable guidance that supports measurable progress in brand expansion, operational strength, and funding readiness.
Looking ahead, Kristi’s goals are ambitious yet grounded in purpose. She aims to scale both Kinky Rootz Salon and Queen of Kinks without compromising cultural authenticity, to establish operational systems that can support growing demand, and to continue developing sustainable products and services. With PCV’s continued support, she anticipates achieving these goals through a combination of strategic mentorship, access to funding opportunities, and expert guidance that bridges the gap between day-to-day operations and long-term growth.
Through her partnership with PCV, Kristi Mefford is building more than just successful businesses, she is working towards a legacy of empowerment, sustainability, and cultural celebration, demonstrating how mission-driven entrepreneurship can thrive with the right combination of mentorship, capital, and strategic guidance
