Training on the Job and Beyond

Family Laundry is a wash-and-fold delivery service that opened its first laundromat in Oakland in 2018. Now with over 30 employees and a fleet of solar-charged delivery vehicles as of 2025, co-founder David Macquart-Moulin balances training within the constraints of manual labor.

“Our staff provides excellent service, and we pay competitively,” says David, “but advancement in laundry has its limits.” But by covering $300 each year towards personal or professional development, Family Laundry found a small but meaningful way to enable major life changes. David describes how some employees take language classes, others invest in physical fitness. One employee began driving lessons to get her license. “Within a few months, she was the proud owner of a vehicle, able to take her family around and get to work.”

David says, “we tell employees, ‘Figure out what’s best for you, and we'll support you.’”
